Happy Easter Sunday
[ 3-31-02 ][ 3:38 p.m. pst ][ By Rice ]

I'd just like to take a second and wish everybody a happy Easter Sunday. Today, we celebrate the anniversary of our Lord's resurrection, which really has nothing to do with colorful eggs or chocolate bunnies or even the word Easter itself.

You see, Christianity's cornerstone is based on Jesus's ressurection, because it proved he was God rather than just another wise teacher, which many people tend to write him off as. And it wasn't just a handful of his disciples who hallucinated his revival, either--hundreds of people saw him first hand in flesh and bones days after his crucifixtion! Log that away as reason #379 to believe.

...

Medal of Honor review is coming soon. Keep checking back for it.

I feel like the older I get, the faster time passes by. I can't believe my Spring Break is already coming to an end. I haven't even started to relax yet! Sigh... and tonight, it's back to the purgatory for round 3. Say it ain't so.

Oscars Pick 'Em 2002: Last Call
[ 3-23-02 ][ 8:48 p.m. pst ][ By Rice ]

Oscars are tomorrow! LAST CHANCE to (re-)enter before them golden statues get handed out. The link's right above the headlines to your left.

...

And while the world was sleeping, Gerry hammered out three movie reviews: 1 Oscar contender, 1 blockbuster sequel, and 1 unknown sleeper. Happy reading!

...

And if you haven't wandered to the message board area these past few days, do so! I gave it a new facelift. Actually, I just trashed the old Beseen one and installed the new one hosted by Bravenet. The Beseen board has been feeling really sluggish as of late, plus Bravenet's forum has little smiley faces you can use in your posts. The future is now!

... yes, we are easily amused.

Jedi Outcast
[ 3-14-02 ][ 1:17 a.m. pst ][ By Rice ]

Following hot on the tail of the new Episode II trailer is a second trailer for Raven Software's newest collaboration w/ LucasArts, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. As some of you may know, the Jedi Knight game franchise evolved from the original Dark Forces franchise (which used the sprite based Doom engine, if I am not mistaken). That's why the first Jedi Knight was titled Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. So really, the full name for Jedi Outcast would be Star Wars - Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.

So how's that for convoluted?

Anyways, Jedi Outcast is shaping up to be freaking sweet. It gives tenfold the abilities found in Jedi Knight. The forces are still there, but this time, the lightsabre will be your primary weapon. You can hurl it out and pull it back like a razor sharp boomerang, and block just about every blaster shot that comes your way. Also, from what I can gather by watching the trailer umpteen times, you can also spiderwalk on the wall to dodge enemy fire or catch your multiplayer opponents off guard. And by the way, it's all powered by the Quake III engine. Awww, yeah.

Strong, the dark side is...

You can view this trailer through the LucasArts webpage here. I'm not sure if you'll need to sign up first though, but that shouldn't deter you anyway. If you missed the original trailer, you can get it from FilePlanet (which definitely requires you to sign up) here.

Return To Castle Wolfenstein
[ 3-11-02 ][ 1:36 p.m. pst ][ By Rice ]

--> Click! <--

"For many gamers in their early 20's, the name Wolfenstein brings a silly, nostalgic grin to their faces. I know, because I am one of them. My very first PC, a blistering 40 MHz 386, came preloaded with id Software's breakthru hit Wolfenstein 3D..."

...

Wolfy review delievered as promised. Once I finish Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, I'll review that sucker too. And some of you may be wondering about my extremely backlogged GameCube articles. I'll probably end up scratching Luigi's Mansion, but the Rogue Leader review is still scheduled for sometime in the future. Most likely by the end of March.

Until next time, au revoir.

Picture of the Day
[ 3-11-02 ][ 12:17 a.m. pst ][ By Rice ]

Ever wonder what Earth looks like to the floating space debris at night? Wonder no more, my curious friends.

Now before you get smart on me and figure out all of Earth doesn't plunge into night all at once, the shot above was pieced together by gazillions of satellite photo's taken individually so that every sliver's timezone is exactly the same as its neighbors. Pretty neat, huh? Funny how the U.S. is lit up like Vegas in Christmas while Africa is all but nonexistant. I hope that fact reminds you that we're the luckiest people on Earth, and when you're stressed about work or school, remember that at least you're not diseased and hungry.

...

A Return to Castle Wolfenstein review has been finished and prepped since Wednesday last week. However, I left all the data in my machine at work, and I haven't been there since, so much apologies to those who surf on in here seeking entertainment, only to find stark silence. It will be posted by Monday night, if not earlier. And the general state of affairs around Rice World will pick up by the end of March after Winter Quarter. Promise.

...

For those of you that haven't been diligently checking the GERRY section or the message board... uhh... do so. 'Cause there's good stuff there. Remember GWS v2.0 is revised to be updated much like how this news page is. No more bi-weekly issues or any such serial nonsense anymore. With that said, go, go!

M.J. Extinguishes Suns
[ 2-15-02 ][ 2:15 a.m. pst ][ By Rice ]

Da man is amazing. Two days before his 39th birthday, he hits his 3rd game winning shot of the season. This time downing the Suns hopes for a victory. The Wizards are, what, in the 5th playoff seed right now? The big question is, how the HECK is MJ pulling this off?

On a side note, how about a pat on the back, fella's? I may be a perennial ass, but I do have my moments. Like back in Thanksgiving when I said the Wizards will be in the thick of the playoff race. And that was during their early season losing streak too, when all the sports columnists were writing hurtful things like, "trade Jordan!" Hah. Who's got the last laugh now?

*Crack Knuckles*

Consider the role players that he's been winning with all season: Popeye Jones, Jahidi White, Chris Whitney, Hubert Davis, Tyrone Nesby and Lue. Uhh... who?!? Rip Hamilton doesn't count, since he was out for 2 months while Jordan pulled Washington out of the gutters and into the playoff picture. He's basically playing with bench warmers and turning them into winners in the the most competitive league in the world.

Which automatically makes him MVP hands down. Most people think Jason Kidd deserves it, but look at the massive amount of talent surrounding him. Kenyon Martin and Keith Van Horn were lottery picks. Kerry Kittles and Richard Jefferson are explosive scorers. The only thing that kept the Nets in the gutter were freak injuries and Stephon Marbury's ballhogging. There was always a deep talent pool in New Jersey. All it took was a good point guard to come along and harness it.

But MJ... he's got a couple of washed up vets, a couple of green rookies, and a couple of bench warming swingmen. The Wizards without his Airness would've been... well, the Wizards of yesteryear. 19 game winners, and a speck on opposing teams' schedules. Jordan for MVP!

Regarding the Rice World Oscar Sweepstakes, I've made a few adjustments. Mainly, you no longer have to manually type in your entries, you can just select them out of a couple of pull down menus. Also, you can submit as many times as you want. Just remember to keep your e-mail address consistent, because only your latest entry will count. Good luck!

And tell all your friends!

Hope everyone who had responsibilities on Valentines Day went through it relatively unscathed. Kidding. I myself am pretty glad it's over, simply because we will all now be free of the commercial bombardment. I mean, yeesh, ads have been bombarding us since mid January! "Okay! I'll buy a heart shaped chocolate box. Go away already."
