5. Patriot

--> At first I put Patriot on par w/ Braveheart, but after multiple viewings, my critical eye overtook my senses, and I realized that The Patriot is nothing more than an us vs. them movie made by foreigners, and NOT a rousing patriotic epic. Still, my heartstrings consistently get pulled by the movie, and Mel Gibson is fantastic as usual.

--> People compared this as Braveheart with guns. This ain't no Braveheart, folks. First of all, it ain't as good. Secondly, the Patriot stands on its own feet in many ways. Mel Gibson just gets better with age.

4. Cast Away

--> I have a feeling Cast Away could've made my all-time Top 20, if a few changes were made. This is a movie that frustrates you by teetering on the edge of greatness, only to come plummeting down on the other side. Was Robert Zemeckis fucking w/ us? Will a real director's cut be released? I hope so, because this movie is great. Tom Hanks rules.

--> Did you know... that sales of Wilson volleyballs have been up since the release of the movie? And that they're planning to market a ball with a hand print on it? Anyways, Cast Away could've been brilliant. So close, yet so far.

3. X-Men

--> I went into X-Men expecting a steaming load of poop, but instead I got a superb character-based action movie that remained faithful to my all-time favorite comic book heroes. Thank you Bryan Singer and David Hayter (I think). This movie just makes me hate Joel Schumacher's raping of the Batman franchise even more.

--> The only gripe I had about it was that it was too short. And if a movie garners that gripe, then it must mean it was pretty damn good.

2. Unbreakable

--> The bad hype surrounding Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace didn't piss me off as much as the negativity Unbreakable received. I could somewhat agree w/ the flaws of TPM, but whenever someone says something bad about Unbreakable, I get into a murderous rage. This movie is a masterpiece that is only underappreciated by the close-minded.

--> Brilliant work by Shyamalan. Beautiful direction combined with meticulous acting and an unique perspective on the comic tradition.

1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

--> I haven't been this compelled to watch a movie over and over since Saving Ryan's Privates a couple years ago. The fact that it's in Mandarin may unfairly hinder its chances to win Best Picture. That plus the kinetic kung fu that make this an uncanny hybrid of romance and action.

--> This ain't your typical Hong Kong high-wire kung fu movies. Typical ones don't have Zhang Ziyi.
